Repair or Replace Aircon? How to Decide
When an older unit breaks down, the question of whether to repair or replace aircon equipment comes up quickly. The honest answer is that repair is often the sensible choice, and this guide helps you spot the cases where it isn't.
A failed capacitor, a blocked drain, a faulty sensor or a dirty coil can make an aircon look finished when it has years left in it. Those faults are usually inexpensive to fix compared with buying and installing a new system. Replacing a basically sound unit because of a minor fault wastes money.
Other times, a repair only buys a few months before the next breakdown. Deciding whether to repair or replace aircon units comes down to telling the two apart, and that starts with a proper diagnosis rather than a guess.
When repairing makes more sense
- The fault is minor and isolated. Capacitors, fan motors, sensors, drain problems and many electrical faults are routine repairs.
- The unit runs on R410A or R32. These refrigerants are current and readily available for repairs and regassing.
- It has been reliable until now. A first breakdown after years of good service rarely means the end.
- Parts are still available. Common models from established brands are usually easier to source parts for.
- It's still under warranty. Check your warranty terms first, as in-warranty repairs may need to go through the manufacturer's appointed service agent.
Factors that tip the balance
Age and condition
Age alone doesn't condemn a unit. A well-serviced older aircon can outlast a neglected newer one. What matters is overall condition: corroded coils, rusted casings, brittle wiring and worn fan bearings all suggest more failures are on the way.
Refrigerant type, especially R22
Older units often run on R22, a refrigerant being phased out under the Montreal Protocol because it damages the ozone layer. No new R22 units are made, and the supply allowed into South Africa for servicing existing systems keeps shrinking. That makes R22 harder to find and more expensive. An R22 unit that needs a major repair or a large regas is usually a strong candidate for replacement. Our explainer on R22, R410A and R32 refrigerants covers the differences.
Repair cost against the unit's value
Compare the quoted repair with the cost of a suitable new unit installed, then think about how much life the old one realistically has left. A small repair on a solid unit is good value. A large repair on a tired, older unit is money spent on something that may fail again soon.
How often it breaks down
One call-out in several years is normal wear. Repeated breakdowns season after season, especially different faults each time, usually mean the unit is wearing out as a whole. Add up what you've spent in the last couple of years before deciding.

Compressor failure
The compressor is the heart of the system and its most expensive component. On a newer unit, especially one in warranty, a compressor replacement can make sense. On an older unit, the cost of a compressor plus labour and refrigerant can approach the cost of a new system, and the rest of the unit is still old.
Running costs and efficiency
Newer inverter aircons vary their compressor speed to match demand instead of switching fully on and off, which generally means lower electricity use than an older fixed-speed unit. If your old aircon runs for long hours, the savings from a modern inverter model count in favour of replacement. Our comparison of inverter and non-inverter aircons explains why.
Parts availability
Control boards, specific fan motors and remote controls for discontinued models can become hard to source. Universal or refurbished alternatives sometimes work, sometimes don't. If a critical part is no longer available, the decision is made for you.
Quick guide: repair or replace aircon?
| Situation | Usually points to |
|---|---|
| Minor fault on a reliable R410A or R32 unit | Repair |
| Refrigerant leak that can be found and fixed | Repair and regas |
| Major repair on an R22 unit | Replace |
| Compressor failure on an old, out-of-warranty unit | Usually replace |
| Third or fourth breakdown in a short period | Replace |
| Critical part discontinued | Replace |
| Unit runs long hours and is an old fixed-speed model | Consider replacing for efficiency |
Your decision checklist
- Get a proper diagnosis. Know exactly what's wrong and what the repair involves before deciding anything.
- Check the refrigerant. The type is on the outdoor unit's rating plate. R22 shifts the odds towards replacement.
- Look at the history. How many repairs in the last couple of years, and what did they cost?
- Compare the numbers. Repair cost against a new unit installed, considering how long the old one will realistically last.
- Factor in running costs. Heavy daily use makes a more efficient replacement more attractive.
- Check warranty terms. If the unit is still covered, start with the manufacturer's process.

Getting an honest assessment
We work on all makes and models, and our technicians carry out aircon repairs on site at your home or business. If a leak is the problem, we'll look for it before any regassing. When replacement is the better option, we'll explain why and handle the removal and installation of a new unit, including recovering the old refrigerant.
If you're stuck on whether to repair or replace aircon equipment at home or work, book a diagnosis or request a replacement quote, or call 0861 995 092. Once it's sorted, regular servicing is the best way to avoid facing the same question again too soon.
