Aircon Installation in Soweto

A lot of Soweto homes have never had an aircon, and the first one needs to be done right. ARS handles aircon installation in Soweto for houses, extensions, shops and guest houses, plus repairs, servicing and regassing on any make.

Soweto, City of Johannesburg

Soweto takes its name from the South Western Townships and is part of the City of Johannesburg. Much of the housing is the original four-room "matchbox" house, many of them since extended with extra rooms. Some areas have larger homes, and Protea Glen is an established suburb where many families bought their houses with home loans.

Rooms in an original four-room house are small, which is good news: a compact split, often around 9,000 BTU, can cool a bedroom properly without straining the electricity supply. Extensions and open-plan living areas usually need a bigger unit, and that's why we measure rather than guess.

Aircon Installation in Soweto: What to Plan For

Three things decide how an aircon installation in Soweto goes. First, the wall: face brick and block walls are sound for brackets, but we check for cracks and for where the pipe can exit neatly. Second, the outdoor unit: on a small stand it often goes on a bracket high on a wall or in a lockable cage, which helps against theft.

Third, the electricity. Much of Soweto is supplied directly by Eskom rather than City Power, and many homes are on prepaid meters, so an efficient inverter unit matters. The aircon should have its own circuit, installed by a registered electrician who issues a Certificate of Compliance. Our article on aircon electrical requirements explains why.

Where we work in Soweto

We cover the whole of Soweto, including Orlando, Dube, Jabavu, Pimville, Naledi, Phiri, Zola, Diepkloof, Protea Glen and Dobsonville. Small businesses are a big part of it: shops in and around Maponya Mall in Pimville and Jabulani Mall, workplaces in Diepkloof, home to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, and the restaurants that serve visitors to Vilakazi Street in Orlando West. If you're on the Dobsonville side, our Roodepoort page may also be useful, and for the inner city see Johannesburg.

Common questions

For a typical bedroom in an original four-room house, a unit of about 9,000 BTU is often enough. Larger rooms, extensions with lots of glass or rooms under a hot roof may need 12,000 BTU or more. We measure the room and check its sun exposure before recommending a size.

It will use electricity, but an inverter split of the right size uses far less than an oversized or old non-inverter unit. Setting it around 24 degrees in summer, keeping doors closed and cleaning the filters regularly all help keep the running cost down.

Mounting it high on a wall bracket, fitting a steel cage that's bolted to the wall, and placing it where it can be seen from the house all make it harder to steal. We plan the position with security in mind, as long as it still has enough airflow.

Built to Last

Three Things That Make a Soweto Install Last

The right size

Too small and it runs flat out all afternoon. Too big and it switches on and off constantly. Matching the unit to the room saves electricity and wear.

A protected outdoor unit

Secure mounting, a cage where needed, and enough space around it to breathe. A cramped condenser works harder and fails sooner.

Clean, safe power

A dedicated circuit and a surge protector shield the control board from the spikes that follow storms and power cuts.
